Hi! I am Tamara Lena Tacey a second year Biology student at University College Cork. I absolutely love biology especially the nervous system. I would like to teach biology in a way that the student enjoys the class and leaves with satisfaction. While explaining concepts and definitions I would try to make overlaps to everyday life. For example osmosis can be defined as the movement of the solvent (generally liquid) through a semipermeable membrane from a low concentrate to a higher concentrate of solute. The everyday example for this would be a box full of different sized balls and a net in the middle which half's the box. The net lets through the smaller balls but not the bigger ones. The left has more smaller that bigger and the right has more bigger than smaller. The big balls are the solvent and the small are the solute. So If the box undergoes osmosis some of the smaller balls from the left have to go over to the right. the ratio of the two sizes should be equal on both sides. I think giving examples like this makes it easier to understand. I would also definitely try to have a lot if images , drawings, mind maps because the brain picks images up much much faster. I my opinion it is very important that students understand the relationships between concepts as that also strengthens the formation of memory. For testing it would probably be in several different ways and also several times, to enhance the formation of memory. the methods would be active recall by oral test, questions, quizzes, pictures and the student would be asked to recall anything that he / she knows about the parts, discussions between students, written test (essay, MCQ). Three years ago I participated in the International Brain Bee competition. In high school I got 98% in my last year exam for biology. I love reading about it, studying it. My summer this year was spent on biology. I had an internship in the anatomy lab in University College Cork, participated in a six week course of the International Youth Neuroscience Association and did an internship in the limnology department in Hungary.
