Master's student offering tutoring in physics, mathematics, and violin
Michael F.
Speaks: English
Hi, I'm Michael! I recently graduated from Harvard University with a degree in physics and archaeology. I am now a Master's student at University College Cork studying towards a degree in Celtic Civilisation. While physics and archaeology seem quite different, on a fundamental level both fields involve solving puzzles. This is why I love tutoring in physics and maths, both of which are topics embedded with puzzles. I have tutored a number of students who believe that they are simply unable to understand the material at a high level. However, I genuinely believe that with proper instruction every student is capable of understanding physics and maths in an intuitive way. I work to demonstrate this reality in sessions by never giving away the answer to a problem; I instead use leading questions to help the student understand the problem as a whole instead of just the answer. I believe that physics and maths provide a language to understand our universe, and I hope to show my students how much fun it can be to solve puzzles in these two subjects and to use those solutions to understand the world around us. While I hope I have communicated above my love of physics, math, and Latin and my love for teaching those subjects, it's also important to know my qualifications. I have a Bachelor’s degree in physics and have taken courses in classical mechanics, electrodynamics, quantum mechanics, optical/laser physics, quantum information, general relativity, and the philosophy of physics. I have also pursued research in the field of atomic, molecular, and optical physics. Regarding maths, I have studied multivariable calculus and theoretical linear algebra in structured class environments, and I have also learned to apply this math through my physics courses. As for my teaching credentials, I have been teaching and tutoring in physics, maths, and other topics for eight years. Most of my experience has been with one-on-one tutoring in physics and maths. Topics I have tutored in include classical mechanics and electrodynamics, at both secondary school and university levels, as well as in linear algebra and calculus. I also have experience in large-class environments; I was employed for two semesters as an undergraduate course assistant in classes on quantum mechanics and electrodynamics, respectively. Outside of the classroom, I've recently taken up handball, I've dabbled in creative writing, and during the summers I work as a sailing instructor.

Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology and Physics
Aug 2019 - May 2023
It was through my Bachelor's that gained the vast majority of my academic experience, both as a student and as a teacher. I studied archaeology and physics, which involved a wide range of classes. It was also during this time that I discovered my love of teaching. I had the opportunity to work as a tutor for other students in maths and physics classes. I was then able to work as a course assistant for physics modules on electricity and magnetism as well as quantum mechanics. I gained vitally important knowledge and experience through both my studies and through my employment as a tutor and teacher.

Research Intern
Jun 2021 - Aug 2021
As part of the Doyle Lab, I conducted research in the field of AMO physics (atomic, molecular, and optical physics) with a focus on using molecular spectroscopy to develop future molecular laser-cooling mechanisms. My main role was to design a computer algorithm for the analysis of experimental data, which involved finding best-fit functions for spectroscopic data. The research ultimately led to a publication in Nature Chemistry.

Master's studying offering one-on-one tutoring
Michael F.
In addition to physics, my Bachelor's degree was also in archaeology. As I mainly offering tutoring in physics and maths, my archaeology experience is relevant. However, I should mention that through my degree and coursework, I have pursued a wide range of specific interests, spanning American, South American, Northern European, and Egyptian archaeology. I have also conducted research specifically focused on Incan archaeology as well as Irish archaeology, utilizing mathematical and quantitative, and GIS-based methodologies. Should any student be interested in discussing archaeology or organizing tutoring sessions for a related subject, I would love to help!
